The US Navy first stationed the Greeneville, a Los Angeles attack-class submarine, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In the early 2000s, the submarine spent sixteen months at a modernization depot in Portsmouth, NH. Greeneville returned to Pearl Harbor in 2009. Later, 2024 the Navy reassigned Greeneville to a home port in San Diego, CA.
In February 2001, Greeneville collided with a Japanese fishing vessel. Nine passengers, including four students on the fishing vessel died in the tragic accident. The accident led to a reassessment of Navy protocols.
In 2004, during Captain Lee Hankins final year commanding the vessel, the Greeneville received the Navy’s Battle Effectiveness Award.
